Temperature sensors are known to go bad on older jet skis. This can be checked by simply disconnecting the sensor when the ski is off and cool. If the ski turns on and there is no beep, then you have a bad sensor. The sensor is typically located on top of the head of the engine and will have one wire leading to it.

i have the yamaha vx deluxe 2009.....not sure its not over heating but i took the seat off and felt around the engine and it was no different temperature than my other jet ski.. mechanic says there is sand caught in engine and thats the cause of it ( it happened the first time we used it this summer after being dry docked and it was high tide when we took it out)

Simply removing the sensor, and leaving the pink wire disconnected (open to ground/black) disables the limp mode completely. WHEN IN DOUBT, GAS IT!
· To fix an overheating jet ski you should shut the engine down, and tow it back to the dock. First, inspect and clean the jet intake, pump, and the cooling system. Attach it to a garden hose and flush the cooling system for 2 minutes. If that doesn’t help, check the oil level and injection system (or carbs), gaskets, and the temp sensors.

· Water temp high of 171 degrees . Pulled new t stat today just because , and it opens at about 150 degrees. Checked the thermoswitch and it checked fine with voltmeter per Yamaha spec. · My vote is the temp sensor is probably bad I had one go bad, it's common. I fooled with the cooling lines the thermostat etc. then after being convinced it was none of those I took it to the dealer and sure enough it was a bad sensor. Same symptoms and the engine was never actually running hot checking with a non contact thermometer .
